Indian student crowned Miss World 2017



Manushi Chhillar of India was crowned Miss World 2017 during a glittery pageant held in Sanya, China on Saturday, November 18.

Miss England Stephanie Hill was 1st runner-up while Miss Mexico Andrea Meza 2nd runner-up. Other candidates in the Top 5 were delegates from Kenya and France.

Manushi, 20, is currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery. She has ambitions to be a cardiac surgeon and would like to open a chain of non-profitable hospitals based in rural areas.


She has a passion for outdoor sports and actively participates in paragliding, bungee jumping, snorkeling and scuba diving. She is a trained Indian classical dancer and enjoys sketching and painting.

Manushi's personal motto: ‘When you cease to dream you cease to live.’ ‘Courage to give flight to your dreams and the ability to believe in yourself makes life worth living.’


Manushi is the sixth Indian to win Miss World in the 67-year-history of the pageant. The last time India was crowned in the same pageant was in 2000 which was won by Priyanka Chopra.

Other candidates who advanced to the Top 10 were delegates from Russia, Indonesia, England, Korea, Jamaica, India, South Africa, Kenya, France and Mexico. A total of 118 contestants vied for the title of Miss World 2017.


Miss Philippines Laura Lehmann made it to the Top 40 semifinalists when she won the Head-To-Head Challenge events.

Lehmann was also one of the Top 5 finalists in Beauty With A Purpose category.


But Lehmann failed to advance to the Top 15 after the Top 40 candidates were shortlisted.

In the Top 15 were contestants from Mongolia, Russia, South Africa, El Salvador, Nigeria, India, Mexico, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, France, Japan, England, Macau China and Korea. - ROBERT REQUINTINA
