Aretha Franklin, queen of soul, passes away at age 76

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, known for hits like "Respect" and "Natural Woman," has passed away in Michigan. She was 76.

Franklin was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. Last year, she announced she was retiring from music.

Spanning a career over seven decades in music, Franklin had more than 20 US number ones. Her last No. 1 song was a duet with George Michael entitled "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" in 1987.

Last November, Franklin gave her final performance at a gala in New York for the benefit of the Elton John Aids Foundation.

In a statement, Franklin's family said: "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart;

"We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins knew no bounds."

The family also confirmed that her death was caused by advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type.
