Binibining Pilipinas 2017 queens show love to their moms

Here's a throwback article on Binibining Pilipinas 2017 beauty queens!

These one-on-one interviews were conducted just few days after they were crowned at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon on April 30, 2017.

In this article, the queens paid tribute to their mothers and single moms prior to Mother's Day celebration.

Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters says her mother always taught them the value of hard work.

"She led a very simple childhood in a very small town in Bicol. They didn't have much but she has lots of brothers and sisters. They were a big family. She moved to Bahrain where she met my dad. She and my dad came from a very different background. He's from England and she's from the Philippines;

"Growing up, I get the best of both worlds because they taught me the values that were important to each of them. My mom always wants us to work hard. She always taught us to be respectful and mindful of other people's feeling," says Peters during an exclusive interview at the Bb. Pilipinas office in Cubao, Quezon City.

Asked what song she would like to sing for her mom, Peters says: "Just because of the memories, I would sing 'Mama' by the Spice Girls. I used to sing that to her."

Miss International Philippines Mariel de Leon says that her mother actress Sandy Andolong has been very supportive of her goals.

"I love her so much because from the start, she has been supportive of whatever I want to do, whatever job I want, as long as it's good for me. And of course, sometimes I go down to the paths that aren't really good but at the end of the day, she always chooses to give me that motherly love," she says.

De Leon adds: "I know she loves Barbra Streisand. I want to sing her 'Nothing's Gonna Harm You' from Sweeney Todd."

Bb. Pilipinas Supranational Chanel Olive Thomas says that her mother is everything to her.

"My mother, she is my rock, she is my everything. I'm the only daughter. I would say I was spoiled. I'm 26 now and she's still going strong with her support. She told me, 'unless you're married, I would always be here to help you.' Whatever I decide to do in life, she supports me. So I guess my win is her win, too," says Thomas.

The Filipino-Australian beauty queen says that she would love to sing "I Believe I Can Fly" for her mother. "I don't know but every time I was asked to sing a song, I always sing 'I Believe I Can Fly' and now it's in the news. So I don't know."

Bb Pilipinas Grand International Elizabeth Clenci describes her mother as bubbly and caring. "She studied in Cebu and she's one of seven children. She doesn't always show it through affection but she shows it though her action."

The Filipino-Romanian beauty queen says that she always sing "Immortality" to her mom. "That's her favorite song by the Bee Gees and Celine Dion. I sang that during the Independence Day in Canberra for the Filipinos. She would tell me, 'Day! Please sing that song, it's my favorite."

Bb. Pilipinas Globe Nelda Ibe says that her mother has been an inspiration to her. "My mother gave birth to 10 children. From the eldest I'm the sixth. So I really salute my mother. She's been an inspiration for me. Lahat ng ginagawa ko para sa kanya. So I want to be like her. Pero 'wag naman yung 10 children. I can't do that."

Also known as the Pilot Queen, Nelda admits she gets teary-eyed every time she sings "Iingatan Ka" for her mother. "When I hear that song, it reminds me of my mom. Napapaiyak talaga ako."

Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Katarina Rodriguez reveals that she got sad when her mother was not able to see her during the finals.

"She's in the States right now. I was so sad she was not able to see the pageant. She was really born to be a mother. She loves children and she's particular about how the bed should be, how the house should be. I really admire her for that. I know when I have a lot of kids she's gonna be there helping me out," Rodriguez says.

Rodriguez adds that she would love to sing the song "Everglow" for her mom. "The song is 'Everglow' by Coldplay. It's one of their newer song. A bit of sad, happy song. It will hit you in the heart."

* Single moms

The beauty queens also gave their respect to all the single mothers.

"More power to them. I have two dogs and they're like my children. And when  my boyfriend is away, 'Oh my God! I need help!' How much more the kids? And so I have huge respect for them. They're mom, they're dad. They do everything," says Peters.

Clenci said:"I think they are an empowered women. That's one version of an empowered woman - to be able to single-handedly raise a child. It's difficult. I've done baby sitting so I think it's difficult."

"I have to say that they have doubled the work and I really respect them for that. That's hard. That's really hard. I was trying to take care of my brother when he was here and I'm not even his mom and I'm just his sister. Imagine single moms who have more than one child. So I have to say that I give them a lot respect and I believe everyone should give them respect for the fact that they are raising kids by themselves," says Rodriguez.
