Single mom crowned Miss Global Philippines 2018

It is a lot better the second time around.

This after a 22-year-old single mom was crowned Miss Global Philippines 2018 during a pageant held in Paranaque City last August 4.

Mary Eileen Palencia Gonzales, of Cavite, a Star Magic artist of ABS CBN, bested 18 other contestants in the 5th edition of the pageant that advocates women empowerment and tourism and accepts contestants who are single, unmarried mothers.


It was the second time for Gonzales to join the Miss Global Philippines beauty contest. In 2015, she finished second-runner up to Mary Candice Ramos.

Gonzales, who has a baby boy, will represent the Philippines at Miss Global 2018 international contest later this year.

First runner-up honors went to Cheska Viñas, of Marilao, Bulacan; Nicole Osuna Dichoso, Olongapo City, 2nd runner-up; Charlene Duran, Calamba City, Laguna, 3rd runner-up; and Alexandra Moraga, Meycauayan City, Bulacan, 4th runner-up.


Winners of special awards were Sunshine Bantillo, Best in Talent; Nicole Dichoso, Best in Cultural Wear and Best In Swimwear; Eileen Gonzales, Best In Evening Gown.

Gonzales, voted Darling of the Press, is a loving mom to his one year-old son whose father is former Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) housemate and 4th placer Johan Santos.

Santos and Gonzales are not married but they are focused on their son.

In April, Santos told ABS-CBN news that he is a hands-on father to Baby Zohan. “First two months halos ako ang nag-alaga kay Z. Wala pa kaming yaya non. Ako ang nagpapalit ng lampin, halos lahat. Eh, ang hirap ding maghanap ng yaya."


Asked what kind of father he is, Santos said: “Yung tama lang siguro. Hindi disciplinarian, pero hindi rin naman masyadong spoiler. Basta, hahayaan ko lang siya na gawin yung gusto niya. Ganun din kasi yung pagpapalaki ng parents ko sa akin, eh. Hindi sila mahigpit, lenient lang din."

He adds: “Ang focus ko ngayon ay maibigay kung anong gusto niya. Mapalaki siya nang maayos, pagtutulungan naman namin yon ni Eileen."

Sought to comment on marriage plans with girlfriend Eileen, Santos said: "“Hindi naman puwedeng biglaan yang ganyan. Mas maganda pinaplano.”  - ROBERT REQUINTINA
