UP athlete wins Mr. World Philippines 2018

An athlete-model who just graduated from the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City was crowned Mr. World Philippines 2018 during a pageant held at the Resorts World Manila in Pasay City Oct. 23.

Jody Baines "JB" Saliba, 25, of Olongapo City, edged out 15 other male candidates to represent the country in the Mr. World contest which will be held in Manila in March 2019.

Saliba graduated with a degree in sports science from UP last July. He played for the UP Maroons Baseball Team when he was still in school. He says he loves sports and has been an athlete since he was six years old. Saliba also loves dogs, wakeboarding, baseball, swimming, and golf.

The eldest and the only male among five children, Saliba is an upcoming movie star and a former contestant of the reality show Amazing Race Philippines Season 2.

Saliba says it was his first time to try out on pageants and won. "I always love new things so when I saw the opportunity, wala pa naman akong ginagawa, so why not?"

Asked why he joined Mr. World Philippines contest, Saliba says: "Pageant is not about being handsome or beautiful. I want to help others on a bigger scale, especially if you have a title. You can influence many people."

Other winners were: Marco Poli, Mr. Supranational; Robin Hanrath, Mr. Eco International Philippines; Denver Hernandez, Mr Multinational; Ameen Sardouk, 1st runner-up; and Wilfred Placencia, 2nd runner-up.

Winners of special awards were: Saliba, Best Skin by Cathy Valencia Advanced Skin Clinic, Mr. Blue Water Day Spa, Mr. Techno Marine, and Mr. Bench Body; Poli, Best in Formal Wear and Mr. Gamboa Coffee; Hernandez, Mr. Bench and Mr Multimedia Challenge; and Hanrath, Mr. Photogenic. - ROBERT REQUINTINA
