Eva Noblezada receives Tony nom for 'Miss Saigon'
Another Filipino talent has been nominated in this year's Tony Awards which will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 11.
Filipino-American Eva Noblezada, 21, earned a nomination for Best Performance by An Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for playing the role of Kim in the revival of the hit musical "Miss Saigon."
Now one of the longest-running musicals on Broadway, "Miss Saigon" tells the tragic story of an Asian woman left by her American lover.
Noblezada will be pitted against other nominees Denée Benton, "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812;" Christine Ebersole, "War Paint," Patti LuPone, "War Paint," and Bette Midler, "Hello, Dolly!"
"Miss Saigon" is also nominated in Best Revival of a Musical, along with other contenders "Falsettos" and "Hello, Dolly!"
"Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812" leads this with 12 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for Dave Malloy, and Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin, according to the website Playbill.
It also received nods for its two leads: Josh Groban and Denée Benton (both in their Broadway debuts).
Behind with 10 nominations was the revival of Hello, Dolly!, which earned recognition in categories including Best Revival of a Musical and all four performance categories: Bette Midler for Lead Actress, David Hyde Pierce for Lead Actor, Kate Baldwin for Featured Actress, and Gavin Creel for Featured Actor.
Noblezada hails from Charlotte, North Carolina. Her father was born in Guam to Filipino parents.
In 2013, Noblezada won Best Actress at the Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards for her portrayal of Ariel in Northwest School of the Arts’ production of “Footloose.”
Noblezada was spotted by Broadway casting director Tara Rubin when she joined the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York.
Then “Miss Saigon” director Laurence Connor gave Noblezada a private audition in New York. Few weeks later, Nobleza auditioned for Cameron Macintosh, producer of the musical.
So far, only four Filipinos have received awards from the prestigious Tony Awards which hands out recognition in theater.
Lea Salonga is the first Filipino to win a Tony award when she won Best Actress in A Musical for "Miss Saigon" in 1991.
Then Robert Lopez received Tony awards for "Avenue Q" (2004) and "The Book of Mormon" (2011).
