Thousands join celebration of 6th Las Pinas food festival

Re-elected Senator Cynthia Villar led the celebration of the 6th Las Pinas Food Festival as thousands troop to the Villar SIPAG hall in Pulang Lupa Uno to join the festivities. Villar, managing Director of the Villar Social Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Governance ( Villar SIPAG), welcomed visitors and participants to the yearly event which “showcase the city’s culinary heritage and Laspineros’ world-class cooking skills.”   Grand winner: Brgy. Backyard veggies will cushion inflation impact, says Villar

Sen. Cynthia A. Villar believes urban vegetable gardening is the right community response to the high cost of commodities, especially food products, to ensure food-sufficiency among families. Villar, who is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said families should learn to practice urban gardening so they can produce their own greens and vegetables and save hard-earned incomes for other basic needs. "Inflation is high. Everything is so expensive now, especially our food products. Vegetables are among the food produce the cost of which have gone considerably up. But we can counter this. Urban gardening is possible even in the most crowded areas. Urban agriculture is a viable intervention to make poor households and communities healthier and more food sufficient, Sen. Cynthia A. Villar has said. Villar, who is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, notes how the spiraling prices of food and other commodities have made life more difficult for families in poor urban communities. In urban communities where living spaces are cramped and land use is limited, Villar said households can practice urban gardening and plant vegetables in small pots and empty plastic containers to have their own vegetable gardens for their family's supply of nutritious greens. Villar: Practice sustainable aquaculture

FISH farmers need to learn the ropes on responsible and sustainable aquaculture to ensure abundant fish production meet rapidly growing fish demand all over the country and address food security, Sen. Cynthia A. Villar said. Villar noted the speedy expansion of the aquaculture industry has compounding environmental problems caused by climate change, callous governance and irresponsible fish farming practices. "Aquaculture, or fish farming, is essential in the government's poverty and food security campaign. It is important that we ensure aquaculture sustainability so we can continuously meet the fish demand of our country's growing population," said Villar, who is the chairperson of two key Senate panels - the committees on agriculture and food security, and the  environment and natural resources.
