Villar pleased that backyard farming flourishes during community quarantine

          As a proponent of vegetable gardening or backyard farming, Senator Cynthia Villar is pleased that Filipinos now have a better appreciation and increased interest in growing their own food during the ongoing community quarantine.           “I am glad that more people are now seeing the benefits of planting vegetables in their own backyard. RECOGNIZING the importance of nutritionist-dieticians in the health sector, Sen. Cynthia Villar urges them to encourage the public to plant vegetables food to have access to nutritious food without spending too much. In her speech during the oath-taking ceremony of the newly-registered nutritionist-dieticians, Villar cites their significant role in guiding our countrymen on the right eating habits, food choices and healthy lifestyle. The senator, chair of the Senate Agriculture and Food committee, also calls on the young generation to get involved in farming, saying they should start young through food gardening in schools or by giving them training and education related to agriculture. Villar was the guest speaker in the said event with the theme “Nourishing the Filipinos through professional ND practice” held at Manila Hotel.

Sen. Cynthia A. Villar believes urban vegetable gardening is the right community response to the high cost of commodities, especially food products, to ensure food-sufficiency among families. Villar, who is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, said families should learn to practice urban gardening so they can produce their own greens and vegetables and save hard-earned incomes for other basic needs. "Inflation is high. Everything is so expensive now, especially our food products. Vegetables are among the food produce the cost of which have gone considerably up. But we can counter this. Urban gardening is possible even in the most crowded areas.
