Indian student crowned Miss World 2017

Manushi Chhillar of India was crowned Miss World 2017 during a glittery pageant held in Sanya, China on Saturday, November 18. Miss England Stephanie Hill was 1st runner-up while Miss Mexico Andrea Meza 2nd runner-up. Other candidates in the Top 5 were delegates from Kenya and France. Manushi, 20, is currently studying for a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery. She has ambitions to be a cardiac surgeon and would like to open a chain of non-profitable hospitals based in rural areas. She has a passion for outdoor sports and actively participates in paragliding, bungee jumping, snorkeling and scuba diving. She is a trained Indian classical dancer and enjoys sketching and painting. Miss Philippines Laura Lehmann has been named as one of the Top 5 finalists in the Beauty with a Purpose category of the Miss World beauty contest on-going in Sanya, China. Aside from Miss Philippines, who presented her milk bank program in the pageant's category, the four other delegates in the Top 5 Beauty with a Purpose are candidates from India, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Africa. The winner will be announced during the finals tonight, Nov. 18. A total of 118 candidates are competing in this year's pageant. Mariel de Leon: Proud of her achievement as beauty queen

Though she did not advance to the Top 15 of the Miss International 2017 pageant in Tokyo, Japan last  Nov. 14, Bb. Pilipinas International Mariel de Leon has said that she is proud of how far she has achieved as a beauty queen. "I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, how hard I fought and how much I grew & transformed! Strong, empowered, and brave is the new sexy," said Mariel on Instagram, one day after the Miss International contest. Mariel, daughter of veteran stars Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, also said that she gave her all during the competition. Will Arnold Vegafria judge the Miss World 2017 pageant?

How true that Arnold Vegafria, national director of Miss World Philippines, will be one of the telecast judges for Miss World 2017 beauty contest in Sanya, China on Nov. 18? If that's the case, then Vegafria will make history as the first Filipino to serve as a judge in the longest-running beauty pageant. Vegafria, who owns the ALV Events International, took over as franchise holder of the beauty pageant from television host and wellness guru Cory Quirino in July. A talent manager for 22 years now, Vegafria is in-charge of the careers of popular local personalities such as Kuh Ledesma, Iya Villania, Camille Prats, Billy Crawford, John Prats, Kris Lawrence, Enzo Pineda, Baron Geisler, Miss World 2013 Megan Young, among others. Cecilio Asuncion, 5 others to select Top 15 in Miss Universe

Filipino-American producer Cecilio Asuncion leads the preliminary judges who will select the 15 semifinalists for the 2017 Miss Universe beauty pageant which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Nov. 26 (Nov. 27 Manila time). Aside from Asuncion, the other preliminary competition judges are Morgan Deane, marketing director for TAO Group in New York; Isabel Lindblom, model scout for IMG international modelling agency; Bill Pereira, Chief Executive Officer, President and Co-Chairman of IDT Telecom since 2011; Megan Olivi, host of "Ultimate Insider" on Fox Sports; and Miss Universe 1998 now lawyer Wendy Fitzwilliam. US first lady Melania Trump may have skipped Manila when her husband US President Donald Trump attended the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders' Summit and Related Meetings from Nov. 13-15. But Melania, no doubt, is a popular figure among Asians, including Filipinos. Melania, 47, grew up in Yugoslavia and she speaks five languages - Slovenian, English, French, German and Serbian. She is the first US first lady to be born in a communist country. She has a half brother. As she embraces her role in politics, Melania said that his son Barron is the priority for now.
