Manila ready for staging of Miss Intercontinental pageant

The pageant season in the Philippines will kick off with the staging of the 47th Miss Intercontinental beauty pageant which will be held at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City on Jan. 26. To be held in the Philippines for the first time, more than 70 contestants from around the world are expected to arrive here beginning Jan. 8. Filipino-Australian Karen Gallman will represent the Philippines in one of the longest-running pageants in history. She said that she was surprised when she learned that the pageant would be held in the Philippines. “I was so surprised because it never happened before. Miss Universe Catriona Gray finally arrived in New York City last Jan. 3 after she secretly spent the holidays in the Philippines last month. Upon her arrival at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Filipino-Australian beauty queen was mobbed by supporters and mediamen who wanted to interview her. She was met there by representatives from the Miss Universe Organization. Pageant fans were still amazed at how Gray secretly stayed away from the limelight during her holiday vacation in Manila for 15 days. But her friends said that Gray deserved a quiet moment when she celebrated Christmas and New Year in Manila with her family and loved ones. 'Mutya' president Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo resigns

Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo announced last Jan. 4 that she has resigned as president of the Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant, one of the most enduring and prestigious national beauty contests in the country. In a statement sent to media friends, Hemilyn said: "Maraming maraming salamat po sa lahat ng tulong at pagmamahal na binigay nyo sa Mutya Ng Pilipinas at sa akin especially during our 50th anniversary celebration; "It is with a heavy heart though that I have recently tendered my resignation as President. Sana po ay manatili ang malalim nating pagkakaibigan. Salamat sa pag turing ninyong kapamilya sa akin. Salamat po ulit and God Bless," she said. Hemilyn did not give any reason for her resignation. Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray called on the public on New Year's Day, to help the people of Albay in Bicol and other areas who were devastated by rains and landslides brought about by tropical depression Usman last Dec. 30. "There have been 57 reported deaths from landslides and floods caused by the recent tropical depression Usman that affected the region Dec. 30," said Gray on her first Instagram story for 2019 which was uploaded last Jan. 2. Gray is the first Bicolano to win the Miss Universe crown after she was crowned in Bangkok, Thailand last Dec. 17. Beauty queen Julieane Aya Fernandez comes home

A student of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City was crowned Dream Girl of the Year International 2018 during the Miss Tourism International 2018 pageant held in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia recently. Julieane Aya Fernandez was one of the five major winners in the beauty contest dubbed the "holiday pageant" because the Miss Tourism International contest is usually staged around the holiday season. Other winners were: Astari Vernideani of Indonesia, Miss Tourism International; Sarah Pkyach of Kenya; Miss Tourism Metropolitan International; Sandra Callahan, Australia, Miss Tourism Global; and Laura Skutane, Latvia, Miss Tourism Cosmopolitan International. Host delegate Caenne Ng of Malaysia won the special title of Miss Southeast Asia Tourism Ambassadress. Carlo Pasion wins Mister Model Worldwide in India

A 22-year-old fitness trainer from Laoag, Ilocos Norte who was about to give up his stint in pageants won Mister Model Worldwide 2018 during a contest held in India recently. Carlo Pasion waited for one year and three months before he could compete in an international pageant. Normally, a Filipino contestant would compete within the year the delegate won in the local search. The pageant in India focuses on modelling and physique. Other winners for Mister Model Worldwide 2018 were: Thailand, 1st runner-up; India, 2nd runner-up; Bolivia, 3rd runner-up; and Nigeria, 4th runner-up. Pasion won the Misters of Filipinas contest in September 2017, earning him the right to compete abroad. He was supposed to join the Mister Ocean 2018 contest in China in August but it was cancelled. "From 300 and 600,  we are granting the 800 wishes of Little Angels. Thank you to all those who helped for making this annual project a success.  We can all be a heaven-sent and we can be a blessing by giving," says Midori Clark Hotel and Casino General Manager Vic Chan, during the gift-giving event held in the establishment last Dec. 18. In response, Jumong Ragondo, an elementary pupil from Sapang-Bato Elementary School, read a thank you letter written in Pilipino in behalf of the Aeta children.
