Candid Shot: Fatima Lagueras

"Stay focused on your career, not on your love life!"

This was the unsolicited advice given by acclaimed Filipino composer Vehnee Saturno to former The Voice: Teens Philippines finalist Fatima Lagueras after he composed a song for her entitled "Pang Habang Panahon."

Fatima, 18, recalls how she and Saturno met and later collaborated for the song which is now available on digital format.

"Hindi po ako masyado kasi sa social media. One time, nag-friend request si Mr. Vehnee. Noong una parang ayaw kong maniwala kasi baka scam. Tutoo pala."

"Sabi niya kung puwede raw ba akong ma-contact para mag-record ng kanta. Overnight niya pina-aral 'yun. Kinabuksan pina-record na niya. Nung ni-record ko na, maganda raw ang kinalabasan. Binigay na niya talaga sa akin yung kanta."

After "Pang Habang Panahon," Fatima is set to record a new song in English, also composed by Saturno. It will be released late this year.

To refresh your memory and for the benefit of the millennials, Saturno is the respected composer behind the immortal OPM songs such as "Ikaw Pa Rin, "Wala Na Bang Pag-Ibig," "Ikaw Na Nga," "Nag-iisang Ikaw," "Forever's Not Enough," "Be My Lady," "Till My Heartaches End," etc.

"Sobrang bait niya. Hinahayaan niya ako na ilabas ang talent ko. Hindi siya strict," says Fatima.

For now, Fatima's mom, Gina, acts as her personal manager. During the interview, Fatima was accompanied by her dance coach Glendil Elizalde and Kapamilya actor-singer Dodj Mallari.

"Wala siyang social media noon kundi manuod lang ng manood ng mga Youtube videos ng 'The Voice' sa buong mundo. Wish niya sana makasali siya sa The Voice at nangyari na nga. Nagpa-audition siya at nakuha naman siya," says mom Gina.

Fatima was a member of Team Sarah Geronimo when she joined the talent reality show in 2017.

Asked why she chose Sarah G. of the four mentors (Lea Salonga, Sharon Cuneta and Bamboo) in the show, Fatima says: "Nakita ko ang sarili ko sa kanya. Sing and dance din po kasi ako."

Fatima is now a member of the singing group called "Teens 4 U" with fellow The Voice: Teens Philippines finalists Archie Aguilar, Chloe Redondo, and Mikko Estrada. Her dad Noel gave the name to the new musical group. She also cites Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, and Judith Hill are some of her musical influences.

Fatima gave an advice to fellow teenagers who wish to join national singing contests.

"Be confident and stay positive all the time! Dapat ang pagkanta laging galings sa puso!"

Fatima also gamely answered some interesting questions as Pop News Manila sat down with her at the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City. Know her dreams and plans for 2019! Say hello to Fatima Lagueras! - ROBERT REQUINTINA
