Coronavirus crisis almost over: Shanghai to re-open 200 cinemas

More than 200 cinemas in Shanghai will re-open Saturday, March 28, after nearly two months of enforced shutdown to stop the spread of coronavirus, Chinese authorities said. This makes the metropolis of more than 24 million one of China’s first major tier one cities to re-open multiplexes to the public, after others in more far-flung regions like Xinjiang or Sichuan provinces led the way last week. A first batch of 205 Shanghai cinemas will resume operations Saturday, while the rest will re-open “in an orderly manner when the conditions are right,” said the official Xinhua news agency, referencing comments made by Shanghai Municipal Government spokesman Yin Xin at a Thursday press conference about coronavirus prevention. There are currently more than 380 cinemas in Shanghai. Filipino-Chinese groups donate P100 M to prevent coronavirus

Leaders of the Filipino-Chinese community announced on March 12 the P100 million donation worth of medical supplies to the Department of Health (DoH)  for the prevention of COVID-19 in the Philippines. Henry Lim Bon Liong, president of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII), made the announcement during the Pandesal Forum of Kamuning Bakery Cafe in Quezon City. "To support the Philippine government's prevention and control efforts against COVID-19, we are donating P100 million worth of medical supplies to help the Department of Health with testing kits and other paraphernalia," said Liong when he read the statement. Liong said that everything will be coursed through the DoH. "There will be no cash. The donation is in-kind." Reigning Miss World Philippines Katarina Rodriguez may not have won the Miss World 2018 crown in China recently but says that she won't change a thing during the international competition. Filipino teacher is Miss Landscapes International 2018

An English teacher from the Philippines has arrived home days after she was crowned at the inaugural Miss Landscapes International beauty pageant 2018 held in China recently. Karen Grace Atienza, of Rodriguez, Rizal, ended a nine-year drought for Filipino beauty queens when she became the third Filipino to win in pageants either hosted or held in China. The last time a Filipino beauty queen won in China was in 2009. John dela Vega, national director of the Jewel of the Philippines contest, said that the Miss Landscapes International pageant aims to achieve harmony between nature and mankind and protection of animals. Atienza said that she is excited to go back to the Manggahan National High School where she teaches in Grade 9 and show them her crown. Sportscaster crowned Miss World Philippines 2017

A former courtside reporter for the Ateneo Blue Eagles at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines was crowned Miss World Philippines 2017 during a glitzy televised pageant held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City last September 3. Crowd favorite Laura Lehmann beat out 34 other girls for the prestigious title, whose contest is now under the helm of talent manager Arnold Vegafria. She was crowned by outgoing Miss World Philippines 2016 Catriona Gray and reigning Miss World Stephanie del Valle of Puerto Rico. Lehmann will represent the Philippines at the Miss World 2017 beauty pageant in China on November 18. Now on its 66th year, the Miss World contest is the longest-running beauty pageant in history. A new breed of Chinoy cultural ambassadors -- a former US Army and a Dabawenya -- was crowned Mr. and Ms Chinatown Philippines 2017 during a pageant held at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Paranaque City last September 2. Crowd favorites Jacob Munez and Joy Wu won the titles in the contest that aims to strengthen Filipino and Chinese relations. Wu will later represent the Philippines in the 2018 Miss Chinese International contest in Hong Kong. Incidentally, Munez and Wu were also declared Darlings of the Press during press presentation held last Aug. 9. First runners-up honors went to Martin Sy and Angela Elpa while second runner-up, Allen Wu and Kency Ongkeko.
