For the first time in pageant history, a national pageant will conduct psychological preparedness assessment among its candidates so that they will be psychologically ready to commit themselves into an organization. This was revealed by Dr. Jumel Bornilla, President of the Mr. Universe Tourism Organization, who says that the assessments may also include interviewing other people who are close to the client, such as teachers, co-workers or family members. Such interviews, however, would only be performed with written consent from the client, he adds. "Together, testing and assessment for the candidates of the Mister Universe Tourism pageant allows a psychologist to see the full picture of a person's strengths and limitations," Bornilla says, during an exclusive interview. Prime Event Productions Philippines (PEPPS) Foundation Inc., the group that organizes the annual Misters of Filipinas contest, has said that it is fully aware that reigning Mister Universe Tourism Ion Perez has a child when he competed and won in the local male pageant. "The PEPPS Board is very much aware of the fact that Mr. Ion Perez has a son at the time that he joined the 2017 edition of Misters of Filipinas," says the popular pageant organizer in a statement when asked to comment on Perez having a three-year-old son. On May 29, a former peddler-turned-model became the latest toast of the town when he was crowned Mister Universe Tourism 2018 during a pageant held in Pasig City. The Philippines takes center stage as it hosts the first Mister Universe Tourism in October this year. "Our main objective is to promote tourism and culture of every country," said Board Member Gerald Ortiz, of the 4th District of Quezon Province, during the soft launch of the newest international pageant for men, held at Brown Restaurant in Mandaluyong City on June 28. Ortiz said that the debut of the international pageant is targeting 50 contestants. "So far, 20 countries have already confirmed their participation in the contest."
