John Raspado hopeful on Mr. Gay World 2017 crown

John Fernandez Raspado of Baguio City has admitted that there's pressure to win the Mr. Gay World title but he is confident that he would bring home the crown.

"May pressure ngayon kasi sinusundan ko si Christian Laxamana who bagged the second place. So ngayon sana mahigitan ko sya. Runner-up ko sya noon sa 'I Am PoGay' (2014) so mahirap naman ngayon kasi there's a comparison. Nakapwesto sya ngayon tapos ako hindi pu-pwesto," said Raspado during press-send off held at Club690 on Roces Avenue in Quezon City last Monday.

But Raspado is confident of winning the gay pageant which will be held in Madrid, Spain from May 5-10.

"I will be showcasing a different John Raspado. I have tons of supporters around the world. Yun siguro ang pinaka edge ko," he said.

The 36-year-old online marketing trader said that he has been preparing for the world contest since he won the national title in 2016.

"Ang dami ko ng preparations simula ng nanalo ako bilang Mr. Gay World Philippines. Diet din ako. You have to prepare physically, mentally and emotionally," said Raspado.

He also said that he has seen the other contestants for the contest. "Nakita ko na actually yung mga videos nila and halos lahat naman kami deserving sa title. But we will see. Sa online voting kasi ngayon ako ang nangunguna followed by Spain and Belgium."

Asked how winning has changed his life, Raspado said: "Sa 'It's Showtime' kasi, it's more like conquering my fear sa stage. From a shy person, I have become a different person actually. I'm more intellectual and more confident."

Raspado also said that he offers his stint to the Mr. Gay World contest to his mother.

"Malaki ang suporta ng nanay ko. Unang una, yung acceptance n'ya sa akin. It gave me full potential as an openly gay person," he added.

Tolentino said that Raspado would be wearing a national costume which is inspired by a combination of Spanish and pre-colonial influences of the Philippines worth $5,000 or roughly P250,000.
