New official vows bigger, better MWP pageant
A bigger and better Miss World Philippines (MWP) beauty contest awaits pageant fans upon the appointment of its new general manager Arnold Mercado.
"It's an honor and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be chosen as the new general manager of Miss World Philippines. This is my passion, and I will surely give my inmost dedication to this job. You should expect a new branding for Miss World Philippines - one that is more competitive, prestigious, and relevant," said Mercado during homecoming for Maureen Montagne who won 1st runner-up at Miss Eco International 2019 in Egypt, held at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria in Ortigas Centre in Pasig City recently.
Mercado, known as Mama Ru in the pageant scene, was one of the pillars of Aces and Queens beauty camp as its personalty development trainer, and was also operations manager of Empire Studios.
"What I can promise is that we will have candidates for MWP who are beautiful and competent. Yung tipo na pagnakita mo sila, mahihirapan ka talagang pumili ng winners dahil lahat sila winable, " Mercado said.
Mercado replaced Bessie Besana who is now focused on fashion. Asked what makes him different from Besana, Mercado politely answered "I don't want to be compared."
He vows to work harder with Arnold Vegafria, MWP national director, to produce another Miss World winner.
"I don't want to wait for another 56 years for the Philippines to produce another Miss World," said Mercado, a civil engineer by profession and graduated from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City.
Mercado was referring to the victory of Filipino actress-model Megan Lynne Young who the first Miss World crown for the Philopines in 2013.
"We all want to have another Miss World crown. I'll make sure that we will work on it. Sooner or later we will have our second Miss World crown, " he said.
At the same event, Montagne said that she will be joining showbiz following her international pageant stint.
"I am joining show biz and jumping straight back into work. I will be shooting my first Filipino movie 'Go! La Union' later this month. I will also continue modelling and hosting on a bigger scale," said Montagne. - ROBERT R. REQUINTINA
