Mayor Binay pays tribute to Philippine fashion

Makati City Mayor Abigail Binay paid tribute on Sept. 20 to Filipino heritage through a fashion spectacle that promoted traditional clothing and fibers.

Dubbed "Kasuotang Pilipino 2019 (Banyuhay), Fashion Show," Binay said that the event aims a revival of the Filipino identity in the city by paying homage to people of our regional backgrounds and to promote traditional clothing and fibers.

With the theme "banyuhay" (metamorphosis), the annual fashion event was inspired by the outstanding traits of the people from our major islands: industry and frugality from Luzon, partying and merrymaking from the Visayas; and love of heritage from Mindanao.

"These character attributes enabled the metamorphosis of Makati, once a carabao swampland of the Province of Rizal, into the country's premier city, financial district, entertainment hub, and a haven for investors and tourists," Binay said in a statement.

Binay added: "The City Government of Makati and the Museum and Cultural Affairs Office together with the designers of Makati aims a revival of the Filipino identity in the city by paying homage to people of our regional backgrounds and to promote traditonal clothing and fibers."

Beauty queens, professional models, city officials and diplomtic spouses sashayed  oduring the event that was held at Ayala Malls Circuit. It was directed by Bernard Yabut Maybituin of Lumina Events.

The participating 11 designers were Therese Andaya, Albert Andrada, Ronaldo Arnaldo, Joel Bautista, Janet Castro, Frankie de Leon, Luis delos Santos, Albert Figueras, Jinggo Inoncillo, Val Taguba, and Marga Nograles.

Binay did not model in the fashion show but she wowed the crowd when she arrived in an Albert Andrada creation.

The mayor also said that the event hopes to bolster the city's claim as the fashion capital of the Philippines. (Robert R. Requintina)
