New Reyna ng Aliwan 2019 named

A beauty queen from Baguio City has assumed the Reyna ng Aliwan 2019 title after the original winner was stripped of the title allegedly for violating the terms and conditions of the pageant.

Roi Neve Comanda, who represented the Panagbenga festival, won 2nd runner-up during the Aliwan Fiesta celebrations last April, as announced by Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC).
"I am so happy because the last time Baguio City won was in 2006. This is a wonderful gift to our city," Comanda said. She was crowned by Reyna ng Aliwan 2018 Chelsea Fernandez.

Comanda, 20, is a student at the University of the Cordilleras taking up accountancy and business administration. As Reyna ng Aliwan, she will tour the country and grace festivals.

This is the first time that a Reyna ng Aliwan winner was stripped of the title in the 17-year history of the pageant.

Comanda replaced Nicole Borromeo who had violated the pageant when she participated in two pageants - Miss Teen Philippines and Miss Millennial Philippines - immediately after she was crowned Reyna ng Aliwan.

The pageant's first runner-up did not assume the title because she also joined Miss Millennial Philippines contest which aired on the popular noontime show "Eat Bulaga" on GMA 7.

MBC president Ruperto S. Nicdao said that it was a tough decision for the board to change the winner.

"She (Borromeo) was able to do her duties for few months. But when we asked her to choose between the two pageants, she decided to join Miss Millennial Philippines," said Nicdao, during the press briefing at Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Pasay City.

The cash prize for Borromeo has been given in full, apart from the appearance fee the queen usually gets when she tours the country.

"With Comanda, we will give her half of the year's salary since she assumed the title halfway," said Susan Isorena-Arcega, resident PR of MBC.

The Reyna ng Aliwan has been a stepping stone for some of the country's future beauty queens.

Aliwan beauty queens who went on to compete in international pageants and won include Rizzini Gomez (Miss Tourism International 2013), Mary Jean Lastimosa (Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2014), Jamie Herrell (Miss Earth 2014), Angeli Dione Gomez (Miss Tourism International 2014), Rogelie Catacutan (Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2015) and Cynthia Thomalla (Miss Eco International 2017).

Reyna ng Aliwan runners-up who have also won major titles include Karla Henry (Miss Earth 2008) and Ma. Ahtisa Manalo (Bb. Pilipinas International 2018). (Robert R. Requintina)
