Candid Shot: Cory Quirino

Wellness guru Cory Quirino has apparently found some secrets to the fountain of youth as many people still couldn't believe she's already in her senior years.

"I'm 66! Actually I announced it on DzMM Tele-Radyo. You know in one of the events I attended, a socialite tells me and says: "C'mon Cory! You are still in denial and you haven't revealed your age. So I told her to watch my program on 'Tele-Radyo' because I will make a big announcement!''

Cory recalls: "So I told the cameraman, 'Close up!' I pulled out my senior citizen's card and I said: 'Official! And officially I'm announcing 'senior na po ako!' After that tumaas ang rating!"

As the newest Face of Toledomed Skin and Body Center, Cory says she is still being tapped to endorse other products because of her age.

"Precisely because of my age, people ask me to endorse. The usual reaction of most people was, and continues to be, 'how do you do that?' Because I am a living testimony of wellness and lifestyle;

"Real beauty, I know it's a universal answer, but real beauty is the harmony of your soul and body. So it's a holistic approach that I have adopted and I've been known for since the late 90's;

"I continue to promote wellness as a lifestyle. Of course, corollary to that would be anti-aging. Because if you live well, you can defy the laws of gravity. Of course you need a good partner like Dr. Librado N. Toledo Jr. (owner of Toledomed) who understands and believes in that advocacy," Cory adds.

Cory says that people can live longer if they can manager their health and lifestyle. "One can have a long and fruitful life beyond the normal expectations of statistically proven life span of many today which is 73 or 75 more or less. You can go beyond 75 and lead a very productive life. You can redefine yourself at every stage of your life."

The popular host of the Sunday radio show "Ma-Beauty Po Naman" on DzMM, now on its 14th year, shares to POP NEWS PHILIPPINES some interesting tips on health and wellness. - ROBERT REQUINTINA

1) Your advice to smokers?
"Most people believe in the old adage 'Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die'. Smokers reject any form of advise until it is too late. My father Tomas Quirino was a classic example. He smoked from his late teens until his late 50’s. When he turned 60 his health began to slowly deteriorate until he passed away at 63 due to lung cancer. My only advice to smokers is to think about their own families. By ceasing to smoke they could extend their lives and have more quality time with their loved ones."

2) Your advice to beer drinkers?

"Truth is, alcoholic beverages are not toxic to the body if taken in moderation. Beer is one of the most harmless of drinks together along with wine. Ever wondered where the expression ‘beer belly’ come from? It refers to people who tend to binge. The recommended daily limit for alcohol  is 3 glasses for men and 2 for women."

3) The best way to beat stress?
"Stress is the unseen cause of illness in the 21st century. Even if you passed your executive check up with flying colors, all it takes is one emotional challenge to upset your sugar , cholesterol and blood pressure readings. Stress management is key. Learn to control your emotions. Master the art of harmony and balance. Pray, meditate and engage in mind-body exercises like yoga, tai-chi, qi-gong. "

4) The best thing to do if you have colds?
"To prevent a cold, hydrate properly - from 10-12 glasses daily. For cold management, increase water intake to 15 glasses. Take vitamin C supplements from 1,000-3,000 mg daily with food. Or go for vit C iv drip as prescribed by your doctor. Bed rest is required for 3 days minimum."

5) Your favorite midnight snack/s?
"Midnight snacking should be taboo unless you plan to stay awake until early morning! Your cut-off should be 9 p.m. for the final meal of the day. But if you are still awake and hungry at midnight , I would suggest something light for digestion like a vegetable soup or a glass of warm almond milk and a sugar-free oatmeal cookie. If you wish to have vegetables, a serving of singkamas would be good."

6) Who are your idol/s in wellness?
"Jane Fonda started it all. Today in her 70’s she still looks wonderfully fit."

7) Three food you simply cannot resist?
"Irresistible? Chocolates of course. Go for dark chocolate with a cacao content of 65 in order to get its antioxidant benefits. Kakanin is temptingly inviting. Traditional Filipino desserts are the best.  Peanuts and peanut butter are very appealing to me too. "

8) The most beautiful woman you've ever met?
"The most beautiful woman to me has to be my own mother. Without any surgical or non-surgical interventions she maintained her beauty until her late 70’s. If only she had not smoked, then cancer would not have taken her so soon."

9) Three food that you avoid?
"I have stopped eating beef, pork and lobsters/shrimps for nearly 30 years."

10) Your favorite scent/s?
"My fragrances are light and natural like Grace by Philosophy, Royal Ambree cologne and  floral and fruit scents by Jo Malone."

11) Your favorite wellness tip/s?

"Love yourself. Be kind to your body, mind, heart and spirit. If you feed yourself nutritious foods then also feed your heart and mind with positive and life-affirming feelings and thoughts. Ultimately, be at peace with yourself and your God."
