Miss Asia Pacific International suspends 2020 beauty pageant

The staging of the Miss Asia Pacific International (MAPI) 2020 beauty pageant, one of the most enduring beauty contests, has been "suspended until further notice" due to COVID-19.

"As the world faces uncertain times, we are one with the global community in raising awareness about the importance of preventing the spread of COVID-19 and flattening the curve. We can all save lives by staying home and dutifully following the necessary health and safety guidelines;

"With this in mind, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that the staging of Miss Asia Pacific International 2020 is suspended until further notice. This was a very difficult decision to make, but we deem the safety of our staff, our candidates, our partners, and our supporters of utmost priority and importance," said in a statement issued by MAPI on June 1.

While the holding of the pageant is remote this year, MAPI officials said that they will continue with their charity works related to the pandemic and advocacy on beauty in diversity.

"The crown may rest but our advocacy for diversity persists," the statement added.

MAPI led by its president Jacqueline Tan-Sainz also thanked its partners, media and pageant fans who support the international beauty competition.

"We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to our treasured partners for the continued trust and support and we look forward to the exciting collaborations we will showcase on our timeless stage once again;

"We also thank the undying support of our media friends and passionate fans; a major part of this difficult decision considered the sad reality of not being able to share our pageant's most cherished moments with you in person," the statement added.- Robert Requintina
