What Catriona, Pia and other queens are saying about anti-terror bill

Filipino beauty queens led by Miss Universe titleholders Pia Wurtzbach and Catriona Gray have joined forces in urging the public to junk the new anti-terror bill which Congress approved on June 3.

Wurtzbach began her opposition to the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 with the tweet of the cards "Junk Terror Bill Now!" Then she followed it up with another tweet hashtag #ActivismIsNotTerrorism.

"I'll be honest, I never really liked commenting about politics simply cos I felt like I didnt know enough. I wasn't confident enough to speak up... I also was never really a fan of tweeting (I'm barely online here) but I realized that I need my voice back...and I need to use it," the Filipino-German beauty queen tweeted.

She added: "Sa lahat ng nangyayari ngayon sa Pilipinas at sa mundo.. overwhelming. Diba? Parang di mo alam kung maiiyak ka o magagalit. Parang pakiramdam mo minsan powerless ka. Parang sasabog yung puso mo. Yung feeling na parang may gusto kang sabihin. May kailangan kang sabihin."

"Pero narealize ko na hindi ako powerless... kasi hindi ako nagiisa. #JunkTerrorBill #MassTestingNowPH #ActivismIsNotTerrorism," she said.

Gray also expressed disapproval of the new bill which was passed without any amendments.

"There is so much happening in the world and in our nation right now, and I know alot of us want to just tune out because it all gets a bit overwhelming. But please, don't allow that to be the reason we revert into silence and turn a blind eye," the Filipino-Australian beauty queen said on Twitter.

Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International 2008 Juliane "Aya" Fernandez, younger sister of Bb. Pilipinas International 2008 Patricia Hernandez, has called on people power in rejecting the new measure.

"Kahit na-approve na 'yan, walang mananahimik. We have done it before, and there is no way we can never do it again -- the POWER OF THE PEOPLE. #JunkTerrorBillNow," said Fernandez.

She also said: "I'd like to hear the reason for their authorship on this bill. Pls make us understand, Congressmen If u r reading this & know their statements, pls reply. Pls. Wag sana mahati ang bayan dahil dito. Wag din sana tayo manahimik na lang. Wag. #JunkTerrorBill #JunkTerrorBillNow ."

Mutya ng Pilipinas Asia Pacific International 2017 Ilene Astrid de Vera also opposed the new bill by posting the hashtag #JunkTerrorBill on Facebook.

De Vera shared a card from a netizen which read: "You can be friends and have different opinions. Sure we can share different opinions on tv shows, celebrities, clothes, or maybe even on food but not on human rights." Then she commented: "this. right. here."

Bb. Pilipinas International Mariel de Leon, who is now based in New York, has called on the public to be aware of what's happening around with a card "Silence is Violence."

"Read. Watch. Listen. Educate yourself. Educate others. Donate. Speak up. SILENCE IS VIOLENCE," said De Leon, daughter of actors Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, on Facebook. - Robert R. Requintina
