BTS makes history in US music charts
K-pop makes history in the American music scene after the BTS album "Love Yourself: Tear" went to No. 1 on the Billboard music charts for the week ending on June 2.
This is the first time that a Korean album finished at the summit of the prestigious music charts since it published its first music hit parade in the US in 1936.
Released through BitHit Entertainment on May 18, the album launches with 135,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending May 24, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 100,000 were in traditional album sales, according to Billboard Magazine.
BTS, whose name is an acronym for the Korean expression Bangtan Sonyeondan (bullet-proof boy scouts), is a Korean boy band composed of seven members. They are Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.
The band blasted into the music scene with the song "No More Dreams" in 2013. Since then they have established their massive fan base abroad.
While BTS is first Korean group to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Albums Chart, it is the third Korean act to enter the US charts, also perceived as the "Bible" of music tally.
The first group to enter Billboard Hot 100 singles chart was the female ensemble Wonder Girls for their hit song "Nobody" in October 2009. In 2013, Psy became the second Korean act to hit the US charts with "Gangnam Style" which peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 singles chart and "Gentleman" at (No. 12).
Girls Generation also charted in the American charts but not as successful as the other Korean acts. - ROBERT REQUINTINA
