Ahtisa Manalo dedicates pageant victory to Filipinos

Ma. Ahtisa Manalo, who finished second in the Miss International 2018 beauty pageant held in Tokyo, Japan last Nov. 9, says that she is dedicating her pageant victory to the Filipinos around the world.

"Pilipinas Kong Mahal, binigay ko lahat para sa iyo, lahat lahat. Philippines, you were my motivation every step of the way," Manalo says on Instagram on Nov. 11.

She adds: "My crown and my wholehearted thanks goes to: The Filipinos, all over the world, for the love and support. Quezonians for cheering me on ever since.  The Miss International Organization, for giving me a new set of family and a great stay in Japan. Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. headed by Mrs Araneta, for giving me the honor of representing the Philippines. Also to Miss Liliana and Sir Gines for taking care of us queens."

This is the first time that the Philippines won first runner-up in the 58-year history of the prestigious beauty contest.

Mariem Velazco of Venezuela was crowned Miss International 2018. Other winners were South Africa, 2nd runner-up; Romania, 3rd runner-up; and Colombia, 4th runner-up.

Earlier, Filipino pageant fans went wild as soon as Manalo entered the Top 15 of the contest, making the Miss International show one of the trending topics on social media last Nov. 9.

Supporters of the 21-year-old beauty queen also cheered when she confidently paraded in national costume, swimsuit, and evening gown.

Other delegates who landed in the Top 15 were from Romania, Mexico, Ecuador, Thailand, Australia, Paraguay, Japan, Indonesia, Ukraine, Spain and Madagascar. From Top 15 candidates, it was cut to Top 8 contestants: Japan, Romania, Ecuador, Colombia, Spain, South Africa, Venezuela, and Philippines. A total of 77 candidates competed in this year's Miss International pageant.

The Philippines has already won six times in the beauty contest. Other Filipino winners were Gemma Cruz (1964), Aurora Pijuan (1970), Melanie Marquez (1979), Precious Lara Quigaman (2005), Bea Rose Santiago (2013) and Kylie Verzosa (2016).

Manalo: 'We will let the world know that it is love, peace, and beauty that we truly care about. And together, we will make a difference.'

A huge fan of crime-busting television series "Charlie's Angels," Manalo says she wanted to become a police officer when she was younger but her parents did not approve it.

Instead, she earned a degree in accountancy from the Manuel S. Enverga University in Candelaria, Quezon. In 2016, she was crowned Binibining Niyogyugan.

Manalo's favorite beauty queen is 2005 Miss International Precious Lara Quigaman of the Philippines. She is a cat lover and loves the songs of Megastar Sharon Cuneta, especially "Bituing Walang Ningning." - ROBERT REQUINTINA
