Will BTS earn 2019 Grammy nominations?
K-pop boy band BTS has submitted entries for the 2019 Grammy Awards which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Feb. 10.
Considered as the highest award in music, the nominations for the 2019 show will be announced on Dec. 5, 2018.
BTS has reportedly submitted six entries for their best-selling album "Love Yourself: Tear" and for the song "Fake Love."
Entries for “Fake Love” include Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop/Duo Group Performance and Best Music Video.
For “Love Yourself: Tear,” the entries are Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
It would be recalled that K-pop made history in the American music scene after "Love Yourself: Tear" went to No. 1 on the Billboard music charts for the week ending on June 2.
This is the first time that a Korean album finished at the summit of the prestigious music charts since it published its first music hit parade in the US in 1936.
Released through BitHit Entertainment on May 18, the album launches with 135,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending May 24, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 100,000 were in traditional album sales, according to Billboard Magazine.
BTS has also achieved several firsts with their international success in music. Aside from being the first K-pop album to hit No. 1, it is also the biggest unit and sales week ever for K-Pop, first foreign language No. 1 album since 2006, first World Music Album at No. 1 on Billboard 200, and Second-Biggest Week for A Group in 2018.
BTS, whose name is an acronym for the Korean expression Bangtan Sonyeondan (bullet-proof boy scouts), is a Korean boy band composed of seven members. They are Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.
The band blasted into the music scene with the song "No More Dreams" in 2013. Since then they have established their massive fan base abroad.
While BTS is first Korean group to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Albums Chart, it is the third Korean act to enter the US charts, also perceived as the "Bible" of music tally.
The first group to enter Billboard Hot 100 singles chart was the female ensemble Wonder Girls for their hit song "Nobody" in October 2009. In 2013, Psy became the second Korean act to hit the US charts with "Gangnam Style" which peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 singles chart and "Gentleman" at (No. 12).
Girls Generation also charted in the American charts but not as successful as the other Korean acts. - ROBERT REQUINTINA
