New beauty queen to fight bullying, body-shaming

A 20-year-old student who vows to campaign against bullying and depression has been crowned Miss Philippine Youth International 2019.

Rikki Mae Abuel dela Pena, who studies at the University of Asia and the Pacific in Pasig City, said that she wants to bridge the experts and fellow millennials who have been victimized by bullying, depression and body-shaming.

"I want to build this community where I can bridge the experts and the victims of bullying, depression and body-shaming," said Dela Pena during a victory press conference held at a hotel in Quezon City recently.

Dela Pena said that she is also passionate about building relationships with other people through charity works. Just recently, she created her fund-raising page for World Vision Organization which aims to support the educational programs in the country.

The beauty queen said that her other advocacy aims to support educational projects nationwide.

"I think Filipino students are suited for international mobility because of hard work, perseverance and special English language abilities," she said.

Dela Pena said that she loves to read a lot. "The more I read, the more I find new answers to the questions 'why' and I can gain knowledge which I can share to others."

Aside from reading, Dela Pena said that she is into travel, fashion design, and volleyball. She also plays the guitar, and loves to sing and dance.

This is the first time that Dela Pena joined a beauty pageant. She said she might pursue prestigious national pageants such as Binibining Pilipinas or Miss World Philippines. - ROBERT REQUINTINA
