Mutya Pilipinas bets undergo self-defense training with PNP

For the first time in national pageant, the 40 candidates of Mutya Pilipinas 2019 immersed themselves in self-defense training as part of their women empowerment program.

"It's all about women empowerment. I want them to learn to be vigilant, to be alert, and to know more self-defense moves," said Mutya Pilipinas President Cory Quirino during an exclusive interview at the press presentation of the candidates held at Citadines Bay City Manila in Pasay City.

Quirino said that Mutya Pilipinas coordinated with the Philippine National Police under General Rhodel O. Sermonia for the half-day seminar.

"This is really my dream - to empower women in that way. I don't want to happen to them what happened to me in 1995," she said.

Quirino was referring to the incident when she, her driver, and an assistant were kidnapped by five armed men while taping for her TV show in Lake Caliraya, Laguna. Her driver died while she and her assistant were rescued.

The seminar was also part of her advocacy "Ikaw Hihinto Ng Krimen against Women" which is an umbrella project of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC). She is also chairman of VACC.

Maxinne Nicole Rangel of Padre Garcia, Batangas; and Andrea Fe Gomez of Baguio City tied for Darling of the Press special award during press presentation.

The grand coronation of the 51st Mutya Pilipinas beauty pageant will be held at the Mall of Asia in Pasay City on Aug. 18.
