2019 Miss Universe beauty pageant heading to Atlanta

For the first time in 68 years, the Miss Universe beauty pageant would be held at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia on Dec. 8 (Dec. 9 Manila time).

This was announced by the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) on its official website on Oct. 31 (Nov. 1 Manila time). It also released its official teaser for the pageant.

“Atlanta has been the stage to some of the word’s most-watched events in modern history, and we are excited to show the one billion annual viewers of MISS UNIVERSE® the rich culture of this city," the MUO said in its official statement.

Atlanta was also the site of the Summer Olympics in 1996.

Five-time Emmy® Award winner Steve Harvey returns as host for the fourth time. Reigning Miss Universe Catriona Gray of the Philippines will crown her successor at the end of the competition.

Ninety-two girls from around the world have confirmed their participation in the beauty pageant.

In the 68 years of the contest, this would be the first time that Bangladesh and Equatorial Guinea would participate.

Gazini Ganados of Talisay, Cebu will aim for the 5th Miss Universe title for the Philippines.

But pageant critics observed that this year's edition of the pageant could be the shortest duration for the staging of the Miss Universe beauty contest.

In previous years, candidates would stay and enjoy the host country for three weeks. This time, the candidates would be in Atlanta for 10 days only.

The candidates are expected to arrive on Nov. 28-29. Other schedules of activities: registration and fittings, Nov. 29-30; preliminary dress rehearsals and preliminary dress competition, Dec- 5-6; national directors reception, Dec. 7; dress rehearsals and Miss Universe 2019 grand coronation, Dec. 8; and departure, Dec. 9. - Robert Requintina
