Thai pharmacist crowned Miss Int'l 2019, PH bet in top 8
A 26-year-old pharmacist from Thailand was crowned Miss International 2019, beating 82 other contestants for the crown, during a televised competition held in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday, November 12.
In her winning speech, Sireethorn Leearamwat said: "Do you know I was criticized a lot when I was crowned Miss Thailand. But I never give up. And now I am here. I dare to be a beauty queen even when there's really nothing to my career. I am a pharmacist. I used all the critics as a power to make myself improve to be the best representative and make my nation proud. So the definition of cheer all women for me is how to encourage support and inspire all women around the world that make their dreams come true and make a great thing to our world."
First runner-up honors went to Mexico; Uganda, 2nd runner-up; Colombia, 3rd runner-up; and United Kingdom, 4th runner-up. This year's theme is "Cheer All Women."
Miss Philippines lawyer Bea Patricia Magtanong finished in the top 8 of the competition.
The Continental Queens were: Hawaii, Miss International Oceania; Liberia, Miss International Africa; Thailand, Miss International Asia; Netherlands, Miss International Europe; Peru, Miss International America.
Other candidates in the top 15 were Indonesia Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Belarus, Finland, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, and Venezuela.
Magtanong, of Bataan, was among the 1,800 new lawyers who took oath in June 2019 after passing the Philippine Bar Examination in October 2018. She graduated at the University of the Philippines.
The Philippines has already won six times in the pageant.The Filipino winners are:Gemma Cruz (1964), Aurora Pijuan (1970), Melanie Marquez (1979), Precious Lara Quigaman (2005), Bea Rose Santiago (2013) and Kylie Verzosa (2016).
The first Miss International is Stella Marquez Araneta of Colombia, now founder of Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. in 1964. Mrs. Araneta competed in 1960.
