Oscars to add new category, shorten gala beginning 2020

Change is coming to the Oscars! Starting 2020, the Academy will add another category for popular films and vows to produce a three-hour program. This was announced by John Bailey, the newly re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and film Academy CEO Dawn Hudson, in an email sent to members on Aug 9. They said that the changes were approved by the Board of Governors during a meeting last Aug. 8. In a tweet, the Academy said: * A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film. * We've set an earlier airdate for 2020: mark your calendars for February 9. * We're planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast. 'Birdshot' is Philippines entry to Oscars 2018

Birdshot,” a coming-of-age drama about a girl who accidentaly shoots a rare eagle, is the entry of the Philippines in the upcoming foreign language selection of the Academy Awards, popularly known as The Oscars. The choice was made by a specially-formed committee within Film Academy of the Philippines, which announced its decision last September 26. Initially the committee was evenly split between “Birdshot” and “Sunday Beauty Queen.” That required Jose N. Carreon as chairman to cast a deciding vote, according to Variety, a popular entertainment website in the US. “Birdshot” debuted at the Tokyo International Film Festival, where it won top prize in the Asian Future section in 2016. Then it took part in other festivals. On Aug. 16, "Birdshot" was part of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines.
