Annual flu shot does not guarantee protection vs COVID-19, says medical expert

You feel safe from flu-related diseases after you had your annual flu jab. Think again! Dr. Jumel V. Bornilla, chief executive officer of the International Travelers Medical Center (ITMC) located at Makati Palace Hotel, pointed out that people who receive their annual flu shot are not spared from getting other diseases like the dreaded COVID-19. "First and foremost, the flu vaccine is designed to prevent infections with influenza viruses, which are very different than coronaviruses. However, if you had your annual flu shot and unluckily you were infected by the COVID-19, it would be easier for the health care workforce to delineate nonspecific symptoms such as fever and cough, which overlap with symptoms of COVID-19 and influenza virus," said Bornilla, during an online interview March 20. Couple pushes same-sex unions as civil partnership

A gay couple involved in pageantry is pushing for same-sex unions to be recognized as civil partnership in the country. This after Congress holds an online poll on legalization of same-sex unions as civil partnership. Manix Genabe, Executive Vice President of Miss Teen Tourism beauty pageant, defended the same-sex unions in a post on Facebook. His partner is Dr. Jumel Bornilla, president of the same teen contest. Genabe said: "My partner and I have been together for almost 13 years but we are still limited to being 'friends' in the eyes of the government and other parties. "I cannot make him my beneficiary for my insurance and vice versa. We cannot declare 'married' status in any document.  "We cannot own properties together. Nadine Bornilla takes the plunge into swimwear fashion

SimoneSwimwear is for the young and young at heart. This is how teen queen Simone Nadine Bornilla describes her fashionable line of swimwear which was launched recently. "Since my target is the young age group and the young at heart, playful colors should be observed. The vibe should be vigorous. It’s like when you see my creation, it’s seems like its targeting those people who are young and people aspiring to remain youthful," said Nadine, a former Miss Philippine Youth titlist. Nadine, a Grade 10 student of Colegio San Agustin in Makati City, expounds the design concepts for SimoneSwimwear. Called Simone Swimwear, Nadine says her line has buoyant colors that will definitely keep you afloat in the scene of the much awaited summer escapade anywhere in the universe. Fresh from her successful stint in Miss Teen International beauty pageant in India, Simone Nadine Bornilla arrived home as she met members of the pageant media in Makati City recently. Fifteen-year-old Simone Nadine Bornilla will be the country's representative to the Miss Teen International contest which will be held in New Delhi, India on Dec. 19. Bornilla is a Grade 10 student of Colegio San Agustin in Makati City. Last Jan. 5, she represented Makati City in the Mr. and Ms. Philippines Youth contest. Nadine, as fondly called by her peers, loves to sing. In fact, she is a Senior Soprano 1 member of the prestigious Augustinian Singers of Colegio San Agustin-Makati. Her talent in singing blossomed following her summer training workshops at Spotlight Artist Centre under the supervision of Isay Alvarez. She also attended ballet classes when she was 8 at Ballet Manila under the supervision of Lisa Macuja. Pageant organizer defends psycho assessment for bets

For the first time in pageant history, a national pageant will conduct psychological preparedness assessment among its candidates so that they will be psychologically ready to commit themselves into an organization. This was revealed by Dr. Jumel Bornilla, President of the Mr. Universe Tourism Organization, who says that the assessments may also include interviewing other people who are close to the client, such as teachers, co-workers or family members. Such interviews, however, would only be performed with written consent from the client, he adds. "Together, testing and assessment for the candidates of the Mister Universe Tourism pageant allows a psychologist to see the full picture of a person's strengths and limitations," Bornilla says, during an exclusive interview. Reigning Miss Philippine Youth Simone Nadine Bornilla was rather nervous when she gave her pieces of advice to some pressing problems facing the youth these days but she passed it with flying colors. During her stint on the popular radio show called "Relasyon" aired daily from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on 92.3 FM, broadcaster Atty. Mel Sta. Maria was simply impressed at Nadine and gave her a thumbs-up sign for being eloquent and sensitive to the issues of teenagers. "I'm really nervous!" Nadine laughs during a pep talk prior to the radio program. Brata Kartasasmita of Indonesia has been crowned as the new Mr. Universe Tourism 2018, replacing Benigno "Ion" Perez of the Philippines. This was announced by Mr. Manuel Genabe, CEO of Mr. Universe Tourism Organization, during the coronation night of Mr. Tourism Indonesia 2018 Friday night. "Your country's representative last year Mr. Brata Kartasasmita did very well and landed as one of the winners being the first runner up," says Genabe. Organizers say that Ion Perez is still Mr. Universe Tourism 2018 pending his formal resignation from the organization. "Let it be known that Mr. Perez from the Philippines has gone rouged but there is no formal resignation submitted by Mr. Perez to the organization," says Jumel Bornilla, President of the Mr. Universe Tourism Organization, in a letter. Bornilla adds: "The organization is issuing this statement to let everyone know that Mr. Perez suddenly vacated and abandoned his official residence and commitments, that he has prior knowledge of, without conveying any reason at all.
