The training on aquaculture has attracted a lot of participants due to the opportunities it provides not only in the breed and culture of freshwater fishes, but also in fish processing technologies and the production of ornamental fishes. Sen. Cynthia Villar, director of the Villar Social Institute and Poverty Alleviation and Governance (Villar SIPAG), said aquaculture training is a popular module among the programs the foundation is offering in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 4A (BFAR 4A), because of the training it provides to help start small businesses like the selling of kikiam and fishball and the selling of aquarium or ornamental fishes. “Ang training program namin hindi lamang nandyan para magkaroon ng bagong kaalaman ang mga tao. Sen. Cynthia Villar has expressed concern over the apparent decreasing fish stocks through the years in the face of various challenges, including wide-scale illegal fishing and ocean pollution from the indiscriminate dumping of plastics. Villar, chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Food, noted that from 70 percent wild catch and 30 percent aquaculture, fish stocks are now sourced 50 percent from the wild and 50 percent from aquaculture and by 2022 it will 70 percent aquaculture, 30 percent wild catch and by 2050 it will 100 percent aquaculture. To address this, Villar said she will continue to promote inland aquaculture, which is increasingly being taught in farm schools nowadays. “The prediction by UN FAO is by 2050, baka maging zero na ang ocean produce at puro aquaculture nalang. Kaya inaalagaan natin ang ating karagatan against pollution, especially plastic pollution, at illegal fishing, at saka pino-promote din natin ang aquaculture para hindi naman mangyari ang pre...

FISH farmers need to learn the ropes on responsible and sustainable aquaculture to ensure abundant fish production meet rapidly growing fish demand all over the country and address food security, Sen. Cynthia A. Villar said. Villar noted the speedy expansion of the aquaculture industry has compounding environmental problems caused by climate change, callous governance and irresponsible fish farming practices. "Aquaculture, or fish farming, is essential in the government's poverty and food security campaign. It is important that we ensure aquaculture sustainability so we can continuously meet the fish demand of our country's growing population," said Villar, who is the chairperson of two key Senate panels - the committees on agriculture and food security, and the  environment and natural resources. In 2017, aquaculture registered 2.24 million metric tons. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed seaweed harvests accelerated in Sulu and Tawi-T...
