Chemist crowned Miss USA 2017

A 25-year-old chemist from District of Columbia was crowned Miss USA 2017 during a pageant held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada last Sunday night.

Kara McCullough, a chemist for US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, bested 50 other beauties in the prestigious beauty contest. She will represent the USA in the Miss Universe beauty contest later this year.

Miss New Jersey Chhavi Verg was 1st runner-up while Miss Minnesota Meredith Gould was 2nd runner-up.

Other contestants in the Top 10 were delegates from Illinois, South Carolina, Alaska, California, Missouri, New York and Tennessee.

During the final question-and-answer, McCullough was asked: "Do you think affordable healthcare for all us citizens is a right or a privilege and why?

The new beauty queen said: “I’m definitely going to say it’s a privilege. As a government employee, I’m granted health care. And I see firsthand that for one, to have health care, you need to have jobs, so therefore we need to continue to cultivate this environment so that we’re given the opportunities to have health care as well as jobs for all Americans worldwide.”

McCullough was born in Naples, Italy but raised in Virginia Beach in Virginia.

As the daughter of a now retired United States Navy Chief Petty Officer, she has traveled and lived in many beautiful places including Sicily, Japan, South Korea and Hawaii.

After being immersed in multiple different cultures, McCullough has a penchant for cooking specialty Italian and soul food cuisines.

McCullough earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Radiochemistry from South Carolina State University.

Her major provided her the opportunity to intern at many universities, which paved the way to her current career at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

McCullough also has a personal community outreach program entitled, Science Exploration for Kids (SE4K). SE4K features interactive science activities, and math and science tutoring for children scholars grades 6-11.

McCullough is honored to represent the Nation’s Capital at the 2017 MISS USA® competition and is excited to meet all of the intelligent women from throughout the country. - ROBERT REQUINTINA
