Papa Dan bids radio show goodbye to focus on love life

After 14 years of playing cupid to radio listeners on "Wanted Sweethearts" on Barangay LS FM 97.1, Papa Dan Villanueva finally bid his avid followers goodbye and went to Australia to be with his girlfriend.

"Mahal ko po kayong lahat. Salamat. Good night," said an emotional Papa Dan on air last February 10, as he was surrounded by radio disc jockeys and other staff members, as shown on "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" on GMA 7 recently.

"Baka this time, ako naman. Personal happiness. I think it's time to chase my own happiness, my own dreams," said Papa Dan, who said that he has to be with his girlfriend Jhoanne abroad.

Papa Dan said that it was love at first sight the moment he met Jhoanne in 2015.

"The first time na nagkakilala kami, I did not ask for her number. Facebook, yes, pero mga isang araw pa n'yang na-confirm. So what I did the first time I met her, nagpa-picture kami bago kami naghiwalay. Sabi ko 'can we take this photo?' Sabi ko 'alam ko naman hindi ka na magre-reply at least I know nakilala kita," he said.

Jhoanne said: "I wasn't really looking for special someone cause I was focused on my career. And I was with my friends. Na-off nga ako nung sinabi nya na love life na lang ang kulang sa'yo. O talaga? pano mo nalaman? Kilala mo ba ako?' "

"In-approach ko sya. I'm Dan and I asked her name. Tinanong ko agad kung ano yung work nya. Tinanong nya ako eh sabi ko sa radio operations. Hindi ko kasi sinasabi. Nahihiya kasi ako pag-ganun. Engineer pala sya," said Papa Dan.

After four months of courtship, Jhoanne said yes to Papa Dan. But his girlfriend later migrated to Australia.

"Sa lahat ng natutunan ko this time, I made the right choice hindi dahil sa maganda s'ya or perfect s'ya. I have to know the flaws baka merong hindi magandang ugali. Kailangang malaman ko na yun at matutunan kong tanggapin," added Papa Dan.

Jhoanne said that Papa Dan never gives up. "He's the one adjusting." On Feb. 13, Papa Dan finally flew to Australia.

Papa Dan also remembered those days when "Wanted Sweethearts" was just starting in 2004.

"Mostly every night, 'yung mga radio programs, kung hindi love advice, letter reading. So we wanted to bring change din sa pakikinig sa mga kaibigan natin," he said.

Papa Dan also believes that the show has matched couples over the years. One of them is real-life sweethearts Joanna Eser and Jon Tamayo who have been in a relationship for seven years now because of the radio show.

"Pag-ako lang mag-isa, naiisip ko, ano kaya kung hindi kami nagkakilala. Kaya thankful ako at nakapasok ako sa radyo para makausap ko s'ya, Nagpapasalamat din ako sa Diyos kasi hindi naman ako naghahanp nun pero hinanap n'ya ako," said Eser, a former caller on the radio program.

"Masayahin kasi s'ya dahil sa whole time ng conversation namin, hagikhikan lang kami," said Tamayo.

Eser and Tamayo said that they plan to get married soon. "Salamat kasi naging instrumento s'ya at nagkakilala kami," Tamayo added. - Robert Requintina/Tempo
